Eckhart Tolle-
A NEW EARTH
This was such a brilliant read and if you like to listen as well, Oprah and Eckhart do a follow along with each chapter on her podcast: Super Soul Sunday! There are wonderful ideas, thought reflections, and so much knowledge in this book. Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:
At one end of the scale of this unconscious egoic pattern lies the egoic compulsive habit of faultfinding and complaining about others. Jesus referred to it when he said, “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that in in your own eye?”
The answer is “When I criticize or condemn another, it makes me feel bigger, superior”.
Complaining is one of the ego’s favorite strategies for strengthening itself.
Ego implies unawareness. Awareness and ego cannot coexist. Every time it is recognized, it is weakened.
The ego thrives on others’ attention. The ego doesn’t know that the source of all energy is within you, so it seeks it outside.
Whenever you feel superior or inferior to anyone, that’s the ego in you.
The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.
People cannot let go of the need to be needed by their child. Parents define themselves by that role and are unconsciously afraid of loss of identity when they cease being parents. If their desire to control or influence the actions of their adult child is thwarted- as it usually is- they will start to criticize or show their disapproval, or try to make the child feel guilty, all in an unconscious attempt to preserve their role; their identity.
Awareness is the greatest agent for change.
